It is natural for social problems to be complex and entail an emotional fire fueled by 1) different ways of understanding these problems and their perceived solutions, 2) power dynamics between the various stakeholders involved, and 3) a complex history about what has been done in the past. Addressing these problems without taking the group’s emotional elements into account risks allowing these emotions to sabotage the opportunity of coming together to collaborate and this emotional fire becoming destructive.

Having participatory theater as a tool allows us to create dynamics in which the different stakeholders can connect with each other, wrestle with the complexity of the problem, and engage in a healthy creative conflict from the safety and distance of the stage. In this space we can feel the emotions without being overwhelmed by them, channeling the fire and transforming it into a constructive force.
